I went outside, it was warm(er), I looked at my roof and then noticed…

Well, spring has sprung. Kinda.   You’ve been outside and eyeballed your roof.   You might see some shingles curling, some streaking, and worst of all, maybe some water in the attic!   You figure it’s time for a new roof, and being a smart consumer, you want to hire the best combination of price and performance.   So, where to begin?   Friends and family are a good start.   No, not to install the roof, but friends and family may be able to refer a company who did a great job for them in the past.   However, it’s important to do some research on your own.   It always amazes me when I go on an estimate and the homeowner has not researched the company that is doing the estimate.   If you’re getting ready to spend thousands on your roof, please make sure the job is being done right.   So, how about a checklist.   A common sense list that you, the homeowner, can follow to ensure the best possible roofing decision…

1. Is the company recognized by the manufacturer of the roofing materials?   Do they have the proper awards and certifications?   They should, and should show you during the estimate.
2. Do they thoroughly explain the system and materials that are being installed?   Your roof needs a complete system, installed with the best materials, and if you’re spending, you deserve to know about the materials and the system being installed.
3. What is the company history?   How long have they been in business, under the same name?   The most reputable companies are fiscally responsible and have a reputation for honesty, fairness, and integrity.   How do you find out?   Ask for referrals.   They should be able to provide you with plenty from the city you live in.
4.  The crews.   Who’s working on your roof?   Can they tell you the name of the roof manager and foreman?   These are important because you have a right to know who you have hired.   The best companies have the best crews with competent foremen running your roof install.
5.   How about a customer service staff?   When you call during business hours, does a friendly and helpful voice answer the phone?   If you have questions or concerns, you should be able to call during business hours and get the necessary answers.   The best roofing companies have your service concerns in mind, and are there to answer your questions.
6.   This may sound funny, but trust your gut.   The sales representative that comes to your house should be educating and informing you about the entire roofing process.   They should NOT be pressuring you to sign a contract.   It is vitally important that you understand the entire process, and a great sales representative will diligently explain that to you.   If you feel uneasy with the sales person, that does not bode well for the rest of the process.   So, trust your gut!

This checklist is just a beginning. The Better Business Bureau and your area Chamber of Commerce can also help with valuable information about hiring the right roofing contractor.   Do you homework, do your research, and be happy about the decision you’ve made. You’ll find that you’ll be thrilled with the value and benefits the right roofing contractor bring to the table.   Good luck and good hiring!

I was looking at replacing my windows but

the glass size is smaller than what’s in the windows I have right now.  I have sliders right now but want to install casement style windows for an updated, more modern look.  But I don’t want all that vinyl and the look isn’t real good either.  Help me!  I want a totally maintenance free window.  I want the look of wood but I don’t want to have to stain the wood.  And the cost of wood windows…well let’s just say I thought they are out of my price book.

I.M. Lumberman

My dear I.M.,

That’s quite a pickle you’re in.  But I think I have the solution.  This is really hot of the presses.  Restorations Windows, made in Temperance, Michigan has recently (March 1, 2010) introduced, rolled out the very best looking replacement casement window I have ever seen.  This truly is a game changer, a break through in the style of casement windows.  I don’t know how long they have been working on it but I am truly impressed!  And the sample I saw the other day at the Michigan Home & Garden Show at the Silverdome was gorgeous!..It had a thin profile, I think it was a cherry wood looking interior and rubbed bronze looking hardware.  Mike Wall told me I could get blinds in between the glass and still have a great energy savings glass package.  Something to do with three panes of glass.  Mike’s available at Kearns Brothers for free estimates………he asked me to put that in for him..something about him being somebody’s brother in law…

You got to check this window out!  It is a star!

Why I am still blogging about ice dams? because

they are still occurring.  It seems like every other week we have been accumulating snow.  The big melt happened… roofs, gutters and downspouts were clean and clear of snow & ice.  Then Sunday night came and whamo…8″-10″ of heavy, wet snow.  Then a couple more inches here and there and next thing we know..we have around a foot of snow on our roofs.  Some sunshine, 30 degree temps and bam! MELTWATER. Meltwater is the precursor to the build up of ice dams.

Please remember prevention helps but is not the end all or cure.  The cure is, ready for this…. never get snow……and that’s not going to happen in Michigan.  Now it can happen in Michigan that we could receive a variety of snowfall amounts, over a range of days or weeks and never see or experience ice dams.  No two winters are exactly the same.  Ice dams, an inexact natural phenom.

Useful knowledge: USE A ROOF RAKE NOW AND CLEAR 4′ OF SNOW FROM THE ROOF WHEREVER YOU HAVE GUTTERS! We can even provide that service for you.

Chicken Little and the Sky is Falling..let’s talk about ice

dams.  I remember last year I got all jacked up around this time, when we had a bunch of snow on our roofs’ and a warm-up was coming.  The warm-up came and melted the snow off of the roofs so quickly we didn’t have time for ice dams and the related problems.

I HOPE I AM WRONG AGAIN!

Most homes in the metro Detroit area, as well as the metro Ann Arbor area have a fair amount of snow on their roofs.  With an insulation value in your attic less than r-45, (which is code and over 75% of the homes in our area don’t meet insulation code requirements), ice dams occur.  Even with proper ventilation in your attic, ice dams can occur.  Even when it’s 8 degrees outside.  The snow on your roof acts like and performs like a thermal blanket. The snow on your roof deck (shingles) is going to melt.  It always does.  When that occurs, the “meltwater” then runs down your roof deck and freezes at the edge of your roof.

What to do now!  Remove at least 4′ of snow from above the gutters.  If your gutters are frozen solid with water (that’s called ice), throw a panty hose filed with calcium chloride…or just throw the calcium chloride onto the ice and that will help to melt the it.  There is usually water trapped under the ice that is backed up onto your roof.  If you are careful, able and willing to chip away, I mentioned carefully, right? the ice..you can relieve some of the pressure of water back up.

or you can call us and schedule a crew out to your house to prevent or lessen the problem.

From now until Saturday..the highest temperature will be 25 and the lows…oh…4 degrees.  Refreshing…
