The Science Behind Class 4

Not every shingle that looks the same performs the same. A Class 4 rating means the shingle has passed the toughest impact test in the industry, and earning it is no small feat.

The UL 2218 Steel Ball Test 

Class 4 is the highest rating under UL 2218, the impact resistance standard developed by Underwriters Laboratories. To earn it, a shingle has to withstand a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet. The drop simulates the energy of a hailstone hitting your roof in a severe storm. The shingle is then examined for cracks, tears, or ruptures. No damage means it passes. Anything less and it does not make the grade.

For context, lower classes use smaller steel balls dropped from shorter heights:  

• Class 1: 1.25" ball
• Class 2: 1.5" ball
• Class 3: 1.75" ball
• Class 4: 2.0" ball, the highest rating available
  

What makes Class 4 shingles different

Most Class 4 shingles use SBS-modified asphalt. SBS stands for Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene, a rubber-like polymer blended into the asphalt that gives the shingle flexibility and resilience. When hail or debris hits, the shingle absorbs the impact and rebounds, instead of cracking the way a brittle standard shingle would. Combined with reinforced fiberglass mats, this construction is what allows the shingle to take a beating and keep protecting your home.
